Can Natural Personal Care Products Improve Your Overall Health?

According to a 2005 survey of 2,300 adults by the Environmental Working Group, the average woman encounters 168 chemical ingredients in her beauty regimen everyday. And let's not forget about the men — they're slathering themselves with an average of 85 chemicals everyday, too.

To be reasonable, I haven't heard of anyone dying from using skincare or personal care products with toxic ingredients i.e. parabens, sodium laurel sulfate, and other petroleum-based products.

That said, I was reading an article from Natural News on breast cancer and parabens Study: Nearly all women with breast cancer have parabens in their breast tissue . Whatever your thoughts are on the link between parabens and breast tissue, why not err on the side of safety? There are great products that are non-toxic and safe for you and your family to choose from so why not choose products that are free of toxic chemicals?

Because we don't know with any certainty what the long-term danger may be from using products with parabens (also methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben) and other toxic chemicals, why not use a preventive approach when it comes to your skincare and personal care products? Preventive care is the best care in my opinion.

Keeping my household free of toxins has been a family goal in the last few years. And although we can't eliminate everything toxic in the environment we're selective when it comes to the products we use.

So where do you find the best products that are really non toxic and safe? Unfortunately, not all products labled "natural" are really natural or safe. You will need to be your own "product detective". It's easy to be persuaded by marketing jargons with words like "natural", "artisan", "botanicals", "naturally-based" that unsuspecting shoppers assume the products are natural and safe.

The bottom line is: use preventive care and make a commitment to start using safe and non-toxic products for you and your family. Many products that I use are not only non toxic and safe but they cost less than products with all the chemicals in them!

Taking a natural approach certainly won't hurt you and can benefit you in many other ways. You might find yourself taking a greener lifestyle approach not just with skincare and personal care products but being more selective with the foods you eat too.

Why September is a Great Time to Start a Home Based Business

What I love about September is the start of a new season ... fall. The leaves turn to different colors, the nights get cooler, it reminds me of a season full of comforts. But the new season also brings new opportunities. For families and moms in particular it's a welcome time to have some time to themselves.

It's also a time when moms start thinking about taking on a part-time job or start a home based business while their kids are in school. In fact, fall was when I officially started my online business selling natural and organic products. If you're in the direct selling business, fall is one of the busiest times for you, and it's an opportune time to line up those home party trunk shows or turn up your sponsoring efforts a notch or two.

If you've been thinking about starting a part-time home based business - a business that you can easily do online - I encourage you to take a look at partnering with one of the direct selling opportunities.

When I say "easy", I don't mean you don't have to put in any efforts. What I mean by "easy" is that there are plenty of opportunities that don't require excessive inventory, bugging your friends, sisters, neighbor, PTA moms to host trunk shows/parties, in order to do well.

Easy, in my business, simply means you can easily build your business anywhere in the US, without driving around doing parties because we have products that you can send samples to prospective customers without having to rely on hosting shows to sell products.

How easy is it?

In my business, you can easily send samples to anyone in the US that wants to "try the products" before they buy. Once you send the samples to a prospective customer, your next step is to follow up, and I mean be diligent with your follow up because you can't expect the customer to contact you. The customer shops directly on your website - the products are delivered from the company - and you earn a percentage of the sales. This is just one example of the ease of using the company samples to gain new customers.

What do you look for when starting a direct sales business?

A few days ago I talked with a lady that was considering starting a direct sales business. She was most interested in the compensation plan and how much money she can potentially earn.

No doubt this is one of the most important elements when evaluating a direct selling business opportunity. Although knowing the compensation plan is important, I was concerned that she was more focused on "making money" rather than choosing something that is right for her.

By "right", I mean finding a business that fits with her values, passion, interests ... the things that will keep her in the business when the initial excitement wears off, and it will. People aren't committed to money, they're committed to their values and the things that are most meaningful to them.

So how do you make money and still do what you're passionate about? What do you look for when starting a direct sales business? This isn't always easy because we don't always know what we're deeply passionate about.

Sometimes people sign up spur of the moment without doing any deep soul searching. Sometimes people sign up for the fun and camaraderie especially if it's a fun team environment. And other times people start a direct sales business because they have a deep passion to educate and change lives.

But what I've found is that without passion for the business, you won't find the motivation to get working on your business. It's nearly impossible to commit to anything without passion. And if you're not working on the business, it doesn't matter what the pay out is, because zero activity equals zero pay.

I have friends in direct sales that represent different companies and products. When you get to the heart of WHY people stay with the company, it comes down to the products, the company, and team support (not necessarily in that order) that are based on personal values that are important to them.

I've found with my female pals, the products are important to them as well as the team support, leaders of the company, and various other reasons why they love the business they're in.

One of my favorite things about the direct selling industry is that there are thousands of products and companies to choose from. If you're lacking passion or if a product isn't working for you, find something else that moves you, and build your passion around that business. There is a business in direct sales that is right for YOU. It's a matter of knowing what you're most interested in and passionate about and find a business around it.

Which Direct Sales Home Based Business Opportunity Is Right For You?

Starting a home based business isn't for everyone because it takes work to build a business. But for the right person that understands the entrepreneurial mindset, a home based business, can be a great way to create additional income.

There are thousands of direct sales and network marketing companies to choose from. Many of these companies offer fantastic products so how do you know which one is right for you? It all depends on YOU.

In general, network marketing falls under the umbrella of direct sales and is a part of the direct selling industry. The difference between direct sales and network marketing is that network marketing emphasizes team building, hence "network". Your business will be more profitable if you build a network of people.

Direct sales is known for "retailing" products directly to end users. Think Tupperware and Avon in the early days when consultants sold products door to door.

Direct selling is the heart of direct sales companies where products are sold one on one, small groups, or through a home party format. This is where consultants can earn hundreds of dollars for hosting a few hours of work. Not to mention, it can be fun gathering with the girls.

But if hosting parties isn't your thing, you can still retail products on your company website, or by sending samples for people to try, especially if you represent a skin care/make up type of business that makes sending samples easy.

There are plenty of great consumable products in direct sales, such as skin care and body care products that women, men, and families use on a daily basis. If you find a company that offers outstanding products at an affordable price that regular people are already used to paying at Target, Costco and regular stores, it's easier to re-direct their spending to your company products.

If starting a direct sales business is something you have in mind, check out the dsa.org for a list of members and products that might interest you. Then start doing your research based on what YOU want out of the business.

Ultimately, your success rise and fall on you and that is why it's vital to your success to find something that fits your interest and lifestyle. Just because so and so is making tens of thousands, that doesn't mean you will, if it's the WRONG business for you.

Whatever you choose to do, be sure to do your homework, contact corporate office directly if you're unsure about something, and look at the compensation plan as well as the retail price of products.

Consider the products. Is it something you would spend money on if there's no business opportunity attached? Think like a customer and ask yourself if the product is something you would pay and use yourself.

Although price alone isn't the determining factor but in today's competitive economy, consumers are savvy and won't hesitate to shop around, because they want not only quality products, exceptional service, but also at an affordable price.

With so many skin care products on the market, should you start a skin care business? Before you start one, take a personal assessment, and ask yourself if a skin care business excites you. Just because it's big business doesn't mean it's the right business for you.

*If making products isn't your thing, there are private label wholesale options. Google "skin care wholesale" and you'll see various companies offering private labels. In fact, one fitness company uses a private label company on their new skin care line.

*You can research direct sales and network marketing companies that offer skin care products. Most of the companies offer body care and wellness products in addition to skin care. You can start with the Direct Selling Association, direct sales directories, Better Networker for a list of companies, or just Google the keywords.

*Be an affiliate marketer for established companies. Nearly every well-known companies these days offer an affiliate program to encourage consumers to sell their products online. Affiliate programs are free to join.

There are many ways to start your own beauty business from home and this is just some of the ideas.

Whichever option you choose, be sure to choose one that is RIGHT for you. This means understanding your interest, your lifestyle, how much time you're willing to invest in your business, your skills, finances, and so forth.

A skin care business is big business because everyone uses some type of skin care and body care products. But that doesn't mean everyone is your target market.

There's a wide range in product types and prices. You also have mass competition from online, offline, infomercials, regular stores such as Target, grocery chains, and virtually everywhere you look, skin care products are sold.

But if this is something that you have a passion for and can get excited on a consistent basis, it can be a lucrative business for you. It's a cliche but true - do what really gets you excited and the success will follow.

Au naturale is not only the hottest trend in skin care and wellness choices these days, but it’s also a lifestyle choice for many people. Interests in eco-green products are on the rise.

You see natural products online, specialty stores, and at your local Target catering to consumer’s demand for natural products.

Why should you choose natural products?

For years, women have been putting toxic chemical skin care products on their face and bodies. Considering that our skin is the largest organ, what we apply to our skin have the potential to penetrate deeply into our skin. Toxic chemicals can pose health hazards for some people with certain allergies.

Here is something to consider whether or not you should switch to using natural products:

The skin care you’re using is wreaking havoc – leaving your skin breaking out or irritated from the products. This could mean you might be allergic to the products. Stop using the products and see if the problem disappears. Wait a few days and try again. If the problem persists, give natural products a try.

There are many places to buy natural and organic products. Be sure to check the ingredients first. You’ll find the price varies with natural products – from $10 to hundreds of dollars. They often come with a big price tag attached depending on the brand name.

Unfortunately, you don’t get to sample the products first before you buy at these chain stores. I would choose a company with a great return policy in case you need to return the products.

How To Effectively Use Glycolic Acid Chemical Peel At Home

How to Start a Home Based Business in Direct Sales

The new year is a great time to start a business. With cheap technology it's easier than ever to start a business online if you have a computer and internet connection.

Personally, starting a home based business in direct sales is a great option. Because it's affordable and flexible to suit your lifestyle.

However, with so many opportunities you will need to do a careful research before you start one. Especially an opportunity that requires that you spend hundreds of dollars on stocking products or to get a "head start".

You should only invest in the start up fee which for most direct sales and network marketing companies is typically no more than $100. There are always options to buy additional products when you first join.

But ONLY buy if you plan on re-selling the products either through home parties or different avenues.

Never BUY additional products to achieve monthly minimums or to buy yourself a higher rank on the compensation structure. That should be a red flag.

Once you decide what you’re most interested in selling, it’s time to do an assessment of the core principles of business.

It’s not enough to be passionate about the products. Although this is an important factor = you’ll need a business plan that includes how you're going to market and promote your new business.

Products don't sell themselves. And you can't rely on your ffiends and family to build a business alone. Learning how to market your business particularly with online marketing will be one of the best investments in your new business.

Consider Product Needs

*Is there a need for the product you’re selling?
*Is the product something people are already using and familiar with?
*Is the product recurring where you can earn repeat sales? Or will you have to look for new customers because it’s a non-consumable product?
*Will the products withstand tough economic times?

Products that people cut back on are things they can do without. Although I'm a jeans fanatic, I'm more likely to cut back on another pair of jeans, over products that I need to use.

Your Business Skills

Once you’ve identified the business you want to be in, it’s time to do an assessment of your business skills.

What are you good at i.e. marketing, writing, and what sort of educational skills that you already have that you can bring to your new business?

What areas you need to improve on? And are you prepared to learn new skills so you can compete in the marketplace?

Last but not least, are you prepared for the challenges ahead as an entrepreneur? Contrary to what some uplines might tell their new sponsors but direct sales is not always easy.

But it's not complicated either especially if you start your business with the right mind-set and understand that marketing is the lifeblood of your business.

It goes without saying you should love what you’re doing because it’s too hard to find the motivation to keep at it. But you’ll also need to be honest in the business itself and consider product need in the marketplace as well as whether you’re prepared to give your best to building a new business.

Because there are a lot of benefits to starting a home-based business. But there are also misconceptions about how easy it is to achieve success in network marketing. The reality is that it's not easy but achievable for the right-minded entrepreneur.

Let's start with the benefits of starting a network marketing business:

Prepare yourself from the beginning with the right expectations. Learn everything you can about being an entrepreneur. Study the mind-sets of successful entrepreneurs and read business and personal development books to stay motivated. Learn business skills such as marketing and how to get leads.

Without new leads your business won't survive for long.

Starting a business by doing what you're excited about is just part of the success equation. If you practice on mastering the principles of success mind-set and marketing skills ... you'll go far in whatever business you choose to represent.

With the fierce competition from thousands of network marketing and direct sales opportunities not to mention traditional retailers ... you'll need to sell beyond your friends and people you know to have any chance of long-term success.

Direct Sales Tips: The Problem With The Warm Market Strategy

If you're like me, you have friends or know people that are in direct sales or have done direct sales at one point or another.

Personally, I think it's a fantastic business for some people to get into. Notice I said 'some' and not all because this business isn't a good fit for everyone.

But with the right training and preparation the success rate could be much higher. There are numerous reasons why so many promising superstars fail but first ... the most obvious is this:

There are numerous problems with using the warm market approach and here is my take on it:

Traditionally, direct sales has relied on and teaches consultants to sell to their friends and family through the home party plan format.

Basically you invite your friends, family, and neighbors i.e. your warm market list to your first product launch. The goal is to sell products and sponsor anyone at the party who might be interested in joining the business with you and get additional bookings.

This strategy has worked for the direct sales industry since the Tupperware and Amway days but times have changed. There are thousands of opportunities today. And with most people online to search for products and to buy products there’s a lot more competition.

With that said, selling directly to consumers is a powerful way to move products. Think of Costco food demos or your grocery stores. We’re more likely to buy if we can sample and try the product in person.

The problem is that it’s challenging for direct sellers to consistently get people to attend their home parties. The warm market strategy works to some degree because your friends and family are supportive and want to help.

But if you don’t learn how to market your business beyond your warm market you’ll run out of potential customers to sell to and quickly.

Without leads, your business will cease to exist, especially if you have the type of business that is non-consumable i.e. home décor, jewelry, collectible items that people aren’t likely to buy on a recurring basis.

Let’s be honest here, when the good times were rolling, people were more likely to splurge but with the economy still shaky, people are cutting back. When gas prices are over $3 a gallon people are going to drive less and spend money on the necessities such as food and groceries.

That’s not to say people aren’t buying because we love to buy but the masses have become more selective on what they’re buying. There are bargains abound with retail slashing prices everywhere you go.

As a direct seller, you need to compete online, offline, with other direct sellers, and business owners. As I said, the competition is fierce but not entirely doom either if ...

You learn the right marketing skills. So if you’ve made it this far in my article it’s not all doom and gloom.

Hopefully the point I’m trying to make is this … there are thousands of direct sales opportunities to choose from. Do your research and think hard about the product need in the marketplace. And price points.

If it takes you the same amount of time and resources to promote a $10 product versus a $50 product earning the same 30% commission … it might be wiser to consider the higher point item.

Not all opportunities are created equal so do a thorough research. Think about product need in the marketplace.

*Is it a product that people are already using which means it’s an easier sell?
*Is it a one-time purchase OR can you get recurring business from it?

Regardless of the type of business you choose understand that marketing and the right kind is what keeps your business growing.

Without marketing, your business will die.

So there’s nothing wrong with selling to your warm market but it only works to a degree. In today’s competitive online and offline competition, you will need to learn not only online marketing skills but incorporate as many marketing strategies as possible to build your business.

There are two things you need to do in direct sales: selling and sponsoring. Sound simple right? There's a saying, in order to achieve your dreams, you have to help enough people achieve theirs.

If you want to sponsor quality recruits to your direct sales business then it's best to start with understanding a critical component of this business and that is: direct sales is a relationship business.

The quality of the relationship matters when it comes to making a sale or sponsoring a new recruit into your business. Knowing this, you would think networkers are better at forming relationships. Instead, too many of them constantly "pitch" the products or opportunity online and offline rather than learning how to "source" and find quality recruits to sponsor.

Did you know that 70% of customers leave because they didn't like the human side or lack thereof of doing business with the prior provider? So yeah, relationship matters a great deal especially in a business like network marketing that depends on sponsoring to grow your business.

Here are some tips on finding quality prospects by sourcing rather than pitching:

These days, social media such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, are filled with business opportunity pitches and product promotions. I get that you're in sales and recruiting but pitching only cheapens the industry and annoys your followers and friends.

Offer something of value to your network of contacts.

Now let's consider sourcing. Experienced entrepreneurs source for potential prospects by being likeable and trust worthy. The best way to become likeable is to help others. If someone asks a question on Twitter about blogging or internet marketing- offer some pointers. It's a powerful way to connect and build rapport in a cold market.

The reason why network marketers aren't good at sourcing is because it requires patience. Sourcing is not a one-way communication. When you're pitching- you are doing the promotion. When you're sourcing, you're actually taking the time to get to know your potential prospects and that takes time.

Relationship building takes time. The longevity and success of your network marketing business also takes time. If you want to make a quick sale or recruit one or two folks then pitching might work for you. But if you're serious about building a long-term successful and respectable business, learn to source and sponsor the right prospects to your business.

Remember, it's not the business opportunity or xyz ingredients in your product line, but YOU and how you treat people that matters before they even consider joining your business or buy from you.

#1 Target market

In addition to link exchanges with direct sales and WAHM directories like the ones below- submit your blog to RSS directories, blog directories, niche directories, social media marketing i.e. Facebook and Twitter and be active on as many forums as possible.

If you’ve been blogging or on the web long enough, you may have noticed those profile pictures whenever you see a comment. It’s called a Gravatar. What’s great about having a gravatar is that it’s in sync with other logs.

Meaning, once you have a picture of you uploaded to Gravatar, whenever you leave a comment on a blog, a picture aka your gravatar automatically shows up by your name. A gravatar is globally recognized that works from site to site … pretty cool isn’t it?

It’s free to get a gravatar and here’s how to use a gravatar to help brand your direct sales business opportunity.

1. Go to Gravatar and sign up for free.
2. When you get a confirmation through your email, just follow the link, and set up your account.
3. Upload a picture of you and save it.
4. It’ll take about 5 minutes to activate.

Why do you need a gravatar?

You don’t necessarily need it but if you’re planning on commenting on blogs, it’s a great way to brand you. Plus, it’s free!

Are You Using Forums to Build Relationships for Your Business?

As with any online networking, it’s all about building relationships. If you’ve been reading my blog, you know I hold value and content marketing in the highest regard.

Adding forums to your online marketing mix in addition to Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social networking platforms, will further expand your contact base. How I use forums on a daily basis is devoting 30 minutes without any distraction. Meaning, I log in, participate, and make a point to wrap it up after 30 minutes. Do this every day and you will quickly see a positive return on your investment.

How you attract people’s attention and start building relationships with them is you. You are the platform and it matters a great deal the quality of your engagement. If you’re using it just to promote your products or get people to join your business opportunity, you will see very little results, if any.

You will gain more friends and eventually business if you use these platforms to connect with people and add some value to their business. The best way to use these forums is to let your signature do the marketing while you focus on engaging with others, without promoting your products or business opportunity!

Better Networker

Better Networker is a high quality site with some of the most successful network marketers in the business like Mike Dillard. On a side note: my business has experienced a huge spike since I’ve started learning from him.

In addition to an active forum, there are a ton of useful information on network marketing in general. It’s a fantastic resource!

Ryze

Ryze is one of the early networking sites. It’s free to join and there’s also a paid membership that allows you to network with additional members. Although start with the free membership. You can set up a profile and start building a network within Ryze. WIN is a good group with active members that are very helpful.

WAHM

WAHM is one of my favorite forums with a lot of active members and lively discussions on a daily basis. Unfortunately you won’t be able to have a personalized signature until you’ve contributed at least 30 posts. The fastest way to get the 30 posts is to introduce yourself and replying to other threads. Keep it short so you can quickly build up the 30 posts to get a personalized signature. Your signature is your free business promotion tool.

Sales Moms Forum

It’s similar to WAHM. Again, lots of active members and another good forum. There’s a nice section on local expos and online events. Before you invest your time in any forums, make sure to participate in a discussion that’s the most current. You don’t want to add to a discussion from 6 months ago.

The Wahm Zone

The Wahm Zone is a little different from WAHM and Sales Moms Forum. You can exchange a link with the site and submit articles. If you’re starting out and want to get the most traffic for your blog, article submission is one of the most effective ways to get a backlink to your blog.

6 Quick Tips To Get Your Direct Sales, Home Party Plan Business on Google

For many direct sales, home party plan consultants starting out, knowing where to advertise your business online can be a challenge. If you’re a new consultant on a budget, here are 6 places to advertise your business for free. I’ve had good results with a few. Besides the fact that it will give your direct sales or home party plan business indexed on search engines like Google, it’s a great opportunity to get your name and business online, on a budget. You can always upgrade to a premium listing if you notice that a particular site generates quality traffic for you.

First thing first: make sure you’re able to use your company’s logo and your company’s name in the advertisement. Some companies have strict rules as to what you can and cannot promote in the ad. Be sure to check in the back office under policies and procedures before you start.

1. Merchant Circle

Merchant Circle is more than an advertisement. It’s a merchant community with these features: rate your favorite merchant, answer questions similar to Yahoo Answers, or add merchants to your network.

For example, if you’re in a skin care business, you can provide answers to questions like what’s a good skin care product for acne prone skin? You can even create a blog, newsletter and import your existing email list to generate a weekly or monthly newsletter and add a coupon to attract new customers, or offer to give away free skin care samples.

2. Link Referral

I’ve had good amount of traffic coming from LinkReferral. The concept built around LinkReferral is similar to network marketing and direct sales. That is, you’ll get the most out of your link if you review other sites and refer sites, and they review yours and refer yours, and so forth. There’s also the forum to network although I haven’t participated in it so I can’t vouch for the quality. I also like the notifications from LinkReferral whenever my site has been viewed or referred.

3. Hoobly

I like Hoobly’s clean format and ease of posting. There aren’t any bells or whistles like Merchant Circle but my ad consistently shows up on search engines and that meets the overall objective.

4. Oodle

Oodle is a lot like Craiglist where you can advertise but also buy and trade. The categories are diversified from real estate to buying tickets for sporting events. Oodle also offers services in other countries like Canada. If you have events or upcoming announcements i.e. product launches or product gatherings, consider placing an ad in this section.

5. Usfreeads

You can try Usfreeads however I found it a bit challenging navigating my way around that you might want to opt for the paid listing.

6. Craigslist

Craiglist is a household name so I don’t need to say much. If you’re posting a job, there’s a fee. Instead, consider using the event or class section especially if your company has upcoming events or if you’re hosting a coffee meet and greet in your area and want others to join you. Although I don’t know what sort of interest you’ll get but maybe worth a try?

Like with any free advertisements, it usually attracts a number of suspicious web sites. But if you want online exposure, get indexed in search engines, it’s wise to leverage these high ranking web sites to give your business some online visibility. And with any advertisements you incorporate, be sure to track it using Google Analytics or another service that you prefer, and see where traffic is coming from. You can always tweak it, or upgrade to a paid listing if you find one that consistently drives traffic to your web site.

Finding the right skin care products for your skin type can be so challenging and if you’re using the wrong products, your skin will show it. I know because my skin is so temperamental since motherhood that there were times my skin’s temper tantrums were worst than my kids. Luckily, these days you don’t have to see a dermatologist and pay the big bucks to get diagnosed for minor skin problems. From WebMD and other skin care review web sites, the answers are within your reach. You will probably have to try several samples first to find the skin care products that work the best for your skin type but I think it’s worth your time if you want clear and healthy looking skin. Who doesn’t?

These top three skin care product review web sites are loaded with valuable information. From DIY (do it yourself) skin care to learning the basics of skin care 101, you will be in good “skin” as you search for the right skin care products for you.

1. Smart Skin Care

I really like Smart Skin Care because it’s an independent site that reviews products by consumers AND the web site does not sell any particular product. You won’t find ads, banners on this site, instead lots of relevant skin care information. There are articles on skin care research, skin care news, skin care forums and even a DIY skin care. If you’ve got the time and an interest in making your own products, you can download a DIY kit. There are reviews on direct sales, network marketing products i.e. Aloette as well as retail brands like Clinique and Proactiv.

2. Skin-care-reviews

Skin-care-reviews is also a good skin care site with a ton of articles on how to treat acne, women’s and men’s skin care issues, anti-aging and natural skin care and even skin care recipes to make your own products. I’m not that motivated to make my own but if you’re willing to try it, be sure to let me know if the recipes are effective or not. Like the above site, there are a lot of great articles and the information is listed on the right hand side of the web site.

3. Skin Care Resource Center

Similar to the first two, Skin Care Resource Center also offers a lot of great skin care articles with tips on anti-aging skin care products and the latest in skin care news but also a section just for men (yeah, they use them too). You can sign up to get the latest news and trends on skin care and tips for DIY at home. And if you love free samples, there’s a list of places that you can get free samples.

Gain More Customers by Offering Free Product Samples

Recently I came across a product I wanted to try before I buy. So I contacted the sales rep and she explained the products, its ingredients, and so forth. She informed me the company doesn’t offer samples however any purchase I make from the website comes with a 30-day, no hassle, money back guarantee. Fair enough I said. But I was thinking: is it that much work to assemble the samples yourself? When it comes to general products like personal care and household products, people are already using another product that's probably working just fine for them. So if you want to redirect someone's spending and gain new customers, offer people free samples of your products, especially to a prospect that asked you for it!

It wasn't that I was unwilling to spend the $20 on the product. It was more about making sure I can use the product without experiencing an allergic reaction. And truthfully, I'm not the type to return a product. It's inconvenient to package it up, drive to the post office, and pay for returning the product. Unless the return is super easy like Netflix or paid by the company like Zappos or Sephora, the product ends up in my trash.

But more importantly, the moral of the story is that I kinda felt like I was given the brush off. Maybe she was an inexperienced sales rep. Or maybe it was her company’s protocol in how they handle sample requests. Whatever the reason, I couldn’t help thinking, I was a hot prospect who just turned cold. The truth is it’s not even about the actual samples but the way the situation was handled. Product samples are a dime in a dozen and I could easily get free samples elsewhere.

Most companies are eager to let potential customers try before they buy because it’s an effective form of gaining a new customer. If you make a purchase at Sephora, a beauty online store, you get to choose several free samples of your choice. Email marketing services like Aweber and Constant Contact offer free trials up to 60 days because they know it’s easier to attract new customers with this offer.

Now, I’m not saying I haven’t made an online purchase without trying samples first or unwilling to. The moral of the story is that when you have someone contacting you with an interest to try your products, not only do you have a hot prospect, but you have a qualified prospect. This is especially an important lesson for direct sellers because the lifeblood of your business is generating leads. Experienced direct sellers know that one of the most effective forms of recruitment is to recruit their best customers into their business so you always start with having a satisfied customer first.

If the situation were reversed, I’d take the time to assemble the products, even if my company doesn’t have ready-made samples. The upside is huge and I’m not even thinking about the one time sale of a $20 order. I’m talking about the potential to build a long-term relationship with my customer.

Why do suppose a company like Zappos spends little money on advertisements? Because the majority of its business comes from their repeat, satisfied customers. Happy customers are more likely to make future purchases and they tell people they know. Zappos is all about customer service- it’s a customer driven company that happens to sell shoes, is the way Tony Hsieh puts it.

Regardless of what product you’re selling- a $20 vitamins or a $40 skin care product, understand that what people want most besides a quality product is to know their time and business is being valued and appreciated. Even if your company doesn’t have ready made samples available, make them up yourself. Do your best to get and retain customers by giving them an opportunity to try before they buy. It's one of the most effective ways to gain new customers!

6 Tips to Syndicate Your Blog Content via RSS Feed

If you have a blog, start syndicating your blog content via RSS feed (really simple syndication), for your loyal readers to subscribe to. It’s a powerful way as a blog owner to promote your blog’s RSS feed and for your readers to get updated news quickly. Let’s say you’re in direct sales or in a business that offers new products or special discounts only available to your blog subscribers, your blog content will be delivered faster via RSS feed. More people are getting their news via RSS because it’s convenient and a time saver to get all their important news in one place.

This is especially convenient for people who follow multiple websites. Instead of visiting each site, subscribing via RSS delivers the content to them in one place via a feed reader. Bloglines is a popular feed reader as well as Google Reader and there are many others to choose from. If you’re a blog owner and not using RSS feed to promote your blog, here are 6 easy tips to get started:

1. Burn an RSS feed using Feedburner. Feedburner will also socialize your feed and deliver content to Twitter automatically whenever you have new content.

2. You can also socialize your feed to LinkedIn, Facebook, BlogCatalog, Bloglines, Technorati, and social bookmarking sites.

3. Submit to RSS feed directories. There are free and paid ones. Feedagg.com is one of my favorites. Most of them is as simple as entering your blog’s RSS feed url. If you’re going to use a paid submission directory, make sure that it’s reputable and submissions are being reviewed by real people.

4. Submit to major search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN and so forth. On my Google Reader, I can see my blog feed as well as others that I’m currently subscribed to.

5. Submit to niche social networks like Ning.com.

6. Ping it everywhere you can. The more you ping the more traffic is generated for your blog.

I have to admit I’m a fan and subscriber to multiple RSS feeds. I also see a huge potential in terms of search engine rankings by promoting my blog RSS feed. That said, there’s always a possibility that your readers might feel the need NOT to visit your blog often because they’re already getting the updates through their feed reader. Certainly something to ponder so I did some digging and came across a blog at Problogger addressing this.

Are You Overlooking Work-At-Home Forums and Groups?

Experienced direct sales, network marketing, and business owners know that the success of their business is all about marketing. Work-at-home, direct sales, network marketing forums and groups can be an effective platform as an add-on to your overall marketing efforts. My post: You Can’t Brand YOU if You’re Promoting Your Company’s Replicated Website attracted numerous comments on my blog, work-at-home forums, and groups on LinkedIn that I participate in. Here’s how I use forums and groups to attract comments on my blog and build an audience without directly promoting my business.

Even if you have the best blog or products but if no one knows how to find you, which means no one knows about you, then you might as well be in business for yourself. Starting a blog is just the first step. Besides churning out value-added contents, promoting your blog will require time and commitment on your part, because you need to ping it everywhere you can.

In addition to promoting your blog to Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, I recommend checking out forums and groups. You’ll find a ton of them on Google, Yahoo, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Ning which has a huge network of groups! Keep in mind that there are more groups than active members so don’t jump in right away but lurk around and see if it offers the quality of interaction that you’re looking for:

Do the members engage with one another?
Do the members offer helpful tips?
Or are they just promoting their products and business opportunity?

Here’s how to search for forums: topic/forum i.e. direct sales/forum. Within forums, you can advertise your business where appropriate however, keep in mind that other direct sellers are doing the same thing.

Personally, I would approach forums and groups as you would social networks. That is, you’re looking to meet new people and make virtual friends. Approaching it from a business opportunity or selling your products is not an effective way to meet people and you’ll find your messages ignored. If you’re new to a forum, participate by answering questions, or responding to comments. Once you’re more comfortable and have connected with some people on a regular basis, you can begin to share your blog posts that offers tips that other direct sellers can use to enhance their business.

In fact, I’ve found sharing topics that are helpful to fellow direct sales business owners, have resulted in frequent traffic visits to my blog, comments, followers on Twitter, and personal emails. None of my posts have anything to do with my company products or business opportunity! The more you share your knowledge, the more likely others will want to connect with you. Besides, if other direct sales folks are only focused on promoting their business, your value-added contribution to the forum or group will only enhance your visibly, and will surely create curiosity.

Marketing your brand will take time and loads of patience. Just remember that if you’re sitting back and doing nothing then you’ll get nothing. As Gary Vaynerchuk says in his book Crushing It “anything is better than zero” and everything starts with one. If you find forums and groups isn’t your thing, check out LinkedIn Answers. Energizing Your Business With Spring Cleaning

Spring is traditionally a time when we get busy spring cleaning our homes. This is the season of renewal, pastel colors, blue skies and sunshine. Let’s review these traditional spring activities and apply them to our businesses!

General cleaning – What needs to be “cleaned up” in your business? Where do you need more elbow grease or a stronger detergent in order to make your business sparkle? When my house is clean and organized I feel good, creative and inspired; when my business feels clean I feel those things a hundredfold! This is a perfect time to do an inventory of your business to determine what needs to be cleaned: Marketing plan? New money goals? Redefine your target market? You name what needs to be cleaned.

Getting Rid of Clutter – Clutter and disorganization have a way of making you feel more disorganized and overwhelmed. What a timewaster; wading through clutter to find something! Where is there clutter in your business? What is causing you disorganization? What are you losing by this clutter? What will you gain by eliminating this clutter? Make a spring resolution to rid your business of one piece of clutter today.

Cleaning the windows – Oh I love clean windows! To be able to see clearly outside without streaks and marks is very gratifying. Imagine the window is the lens that you use to view how you run your business. What beliefs are you holding onto that keep your windows dirty and unclear? (Example: “I believe that making sale calls is being a nuisance!”) Change your view and change your beliefs to something positive that supports your vision for you a successful business. (Example: “I love helping people feel better about themselves when I show them my products.”) You have the window cleaner in you hand and you can choose to change the view!

Rearranging your wardrobe – Out with the cold-weather clothes and in with the spring and summer colorful threads! Where in your business do you want more color, more comfort, more dancing? What new tools or resources do you need? Visualize yourself in your favorite vacation outfit. Make this dream vacation come true this year. Create it through being successful with your business.

Repot the plants – The houseplants love new soil, fertilizer, and a bigger pot to stretch their roots into. What do you want to stretch into? Where do you want to grow? What kind of flower are you? Grow your own garden and give yourself flowers! Perhaps it is time to do some repotting of your business so it can grow too!

These are great questions to use in the spring cleaning of your business. Use them for some self-reflection and continue to support yourself and grow into the marvelous Energized Woman that you are!

You Can’t Brand YOU If You’re Promoting Your Company’s Replicated Website

Last month, I blogged about direct sellers and network marketers need to set up their own blog or website that is separate from their company’s replicated website. Here’s my original post

If you’re new to direct sales, network marketing you may not know the importance of setting up your own blog or website because I certainly didn’t. One of the main reasons why you need to consider setting up a blog (besides the fact that it’s relatively easy to do), is that it gives you the freedom to promote YOU. It’s your opportunity to tell potential prospects why they should partner with you. It’s your opportunity to talk about your company’s products and opportunity, if you choose to. It’s your opportunity to showcase the things you’re darn good at which you can’t showcase on a replicated website.

Your company’s replicated website is a generic website that has the same content and is given out by the hundreds and thousands to distributors. It's beautifully designed, no doubt, with important info about the company and products, however it's not about YOU.

Google, Yahoo and other major search engines index content. The more original the content, the better a blog or website, will be ranked. I could go on and on about why you need to have a blog. But if I haven’t talked you into the importance of starting a blog or website to brand yourself just yet, perhaps this article by Bill Hartzer will shed some light for you. Repeat after me: Direct Sales is Selling NOT Sharing

Now that I've got your attention ... here’s the real scoop on what it takes to succeed in direct sales: recognize that you’re in the business of selling and sponsoring. It’s called direct SALES, not direct SHARE. When I tell people that I love to shop at Trader Joe’s, I’m sharing because I’m not being compensated. But if I tell them about my company’s amazing skin care products, I’m sharing with the intention of selling, so my motives for sharing is completely biased. Sharing and selling is not the same.

Why do you suppose people are uncomfortable even when they’re told to “share” their love for the products? Because deep down they know they’re selling. If they’re just sharing, they wouldn’t feel uncomfortable doing it, because we share our favorite restaurants, movies, and things all the time, without any discomfort.

Let’s be honest here, direct sales, network marketing, is a sales job, and it takes work if you’re planning on making a good income as a consultant. You’re in the business to sell products and sponsor people. Those are the ultimate end goals. However, selling is more than just saying, hey would you like to buy our best selling eye cream, or we’ve got the best compensation plan? Experienced direct sellers and network marketers know that selling takes time to sift through prospects, asking open-ended questions to pre-qualify their prospects, and evaluating their prospects to see if they’re really interested. You don’t have a prospect until someone has an interest in your product and is willing to pay for it. But before you can even begin the selling process, you need to learn the necessary sales and marketing skills. Mastering sales and marketing is an art and takes people years and years to learn it and top distributors never stop learning. They are constantly fine tuning this art form by reading and working on their personal and professional development.

So, the next time you have the urge to share your products, remind yourself that you’re in the business of selling, and if you’re still using the sharing tactic with no success, it’s time to pick up some books and learn the art of selling and marketing. Last time I checked, I couldn’t find a book on how to share but there are plenty on how to sell and market your business

What’s Holding You Back from Becoming a Linchpin? Highlights from Seth Godin’s New Book

It seems like every time Seth Godin writes a new blog post or comes out with a book, we stop and listen to hear what he has to say. There’s a reason why he’s considered a genius by many. As an avid reader, I’ve read a lot of books and lately, I’ve found the new books to be the same old material, but regurgitated, and repackaged, and are somehow more expensive. Seth Godin’s new book, Linchpin, is worth every penny of my hard-earned money. In fact, I’m so moved by it that I’ve dedicated this post on how to be inspired and become a linchpin.

What is a linchpin? It’s somebody in a company or an entrepreneur that’s indispensable. They’re not indispensable because you can’t find someone to replace the mechanics of their job because you can teach anyone to plug in numbers, follow instructions, and so forth. What Seth’s referring to is that a linchpin is someone who is creative, imaginative, who’s able to see and seize opportunities, and someone who creates value in the work they’re doing. It’s what many great athletes have in common too and what separates a champion from a great player. In tennis, it’s more than just talents, but how you respond in those crucial moments determines whether you win or lose.

In this economic climate, your job can be replaced by someone else that can do the same thing probably better than you can but for a lot less money. You can teach someone to punch in numbers or how to do a PowerPoint presentation but it’s a lot harder to teach someone to become an artist. “Be an artist” according to Seth is what it means to be a linchpin. I thought he was suggesting that I hit the nearest craft store and pick up painting but be an artist refers to getting fired up and become emotional about the work you’re doing. Master your craft in whatever business or work you’re in, be different, be unique, and create value in everything that you do. That’s being a linchpin!

When you’re reading this book, Seth challenges you to re-train your lizard brain that has been wired to be resistant and to be afraid. This book will inspire you become a linchpin. It’s for employees, entrepreneurs, teachers, parents, and whatever business you’re in, you will be inspired by his words.

How to Use Google Alert for Your Business

I stumbled upon Google Alert while reading The New Influencers by Paul Gillin. Google Alert is one of those once quiet hidden gems but now a lot more people are using to keep track of what's being said about their business as well as what's going on, on the web, based on the parameter of keywords that you set on your Google Alert.

For example, I use Google Alert to keep track of any news, topic, basically any keyword which starts with Apriori Beauty. Google picks up whatever it has indexed with the keywords and deliver the Alert directly to my Google Gmail. Brilliant!

Here is an example of what came up recently on my Google Alert for Apriori Beauty (it happened to be one of my posts :)):

Why is this tool effective?

It helps me to keep track of not only of my own posts to make sure that search engines like Google is indeed indexing my hard work, and it also helps me to be in the loop of what my fellow Apriori Beauty consultants are doing to promote their business. And, it gives me insight on what sort of conversations are taking place about my business. As Paul Gillin, author of The New Influencers, stated in his book "social media is about conversation marketing". This "conversation" goes beyond keeping track of my fellow AB pals but there is conversations taking place in forums, beauty, skin care, business opportunity blogs relating to Apriori which can be highly valuable. If you don't know what your target market is looking for, talking about, then you're not part of the solution. For example, recently there was an Alert and I clicked on the link which takes me to the beauty forum and I was able to check out all the conversations about Apriori i.e. the products, the opportunity, and so forth. It's a good opportunity to chime in and be a part of the conversation.

Another way to look at Google Alert is a tool that's available for free for you to use. My motto is, if it's free and it has potential to help grow your business, why not take advantage of it? I have a ton of Google Alerts set up and it's one of the things I look forward to daily.

Online Marketing Tips for your Direct Sales Business, Part 2

In my last post, I gave you some tips on how to drive more traffic to your website. First of all, set up a free blog or website in addition to your company's replicated website. Blogger is an easy blog to set up and you can start blogging right away. Since it's owned by Google, Google will automatically index your blog. A huge plus. There are others like Wordpress, Typepad. I like Blogger for its simplicity and a good start if you're a beginner. If you don't know where to start, take a look at mine, or look at other blogs in your direct sales business i.e. competition to see what you like or don't like about those blogs.

Content
You've probably heard that content is king when it comes to blogging. Don't worry about jazzing it up too much at the beginning with banners and too much graphic. It's distracting at best. Focus on the meat of your blog which is your content. Be sure to use good keywords in your title post and blog title. If you're posting about your business opportunity, instead of using the word skin care which is a generic word, you may consider adding in your company's name. For example, Apriori Beauty is an all natural and organic skin care business opportunity. Focus on some niche topics that you're passionate about and share valuable tips that your audience can benefit from. Don't use the blog just to promote your business. I love helping others start their own green direct sales business opportunity using online marketing so my content is focused around this topic in addition to promoting my business.

Register
Submit your blog site to search engines like Yahoo, Technorati, Digg and Pingomatic, so your blog gets indexed quickly. Comment on other blogs is a great way to get your name out in the bloghosphere. I've connected with a couple people that found me through a comment I left on a blog!

Social Media
With millions of blogs, don't expect anyone to know your blog exists. Don't be discouraged if it seems awfully quiet. Start by sharing with people you know and through social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn. I'm asumming you're on those sites if you are looking to build an awesome online business. I'm stressing again that's these are free, so why wouldn't you want to create more visibility for your business!

There are so many books that can go into much greater detail than I can possibly share through my blog so get to the nearest bookstore, and devour as much as you can on this topic. You will be a pro and blogging in no time.

Finally, once you start a blog, be consistent. Post at least once a week to have a real chance of being picked up on search engines. Google and Yahoo love blogging because of original content and frequent updates.

If you’re in direct sales, chances are you’ve signed up with a company that teaches you how to gather a list of your "warm market" which entails your friends, family, co-workers, church members, and so forth. Basically, it’s a list of people you already know and they know of you, to a degree. That’s why it’s called a warm market list. There is nothing wrong with this list as it’s a good list to start generating a list of potential customers and recruits into your business. After all, your sister will certainly buy a product from you, right? However, if you’re looking to build a substantial income opportunity or plan on being in your direct sales business for the long haul, you really need to expand on this list, and start networking with a lot of people in order to build a successful business. Let’s think about this, if you were to open a retail storefront, you wouldn't rely on selling only to your friends and family, unless you have other means to pay for rent and other expenses. It's just not possible to operate that kind of business long term. In direct sales, it’s even more vital that you look to expand your warm market because you don’t have a storefront that people can easily drive to, to learn more about your services or products. You are relying on your personal efforts to promote your products and business opportunity. So how do direct sellers expand on their warm market list once they’ve approached everyone on that list? Here are 5 easy tips every direct seller needs in order to expand their business online.
　
1. If you don't already have a Facebook or Twitter, sign up for one or both. First of all, it’s free! As bestselling author, Gary Vaynerchuk says in Crushing It! "It's free communication. That in and of itself has value and you should take advantage of it". There are a lot of social networking sites to join. Whether you choose Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter, it doesn’t matter. What matters is the level of your consistency and value added contribution. Be genuine and balance your participation with business updates as well as personal updates. Be a real person. Remember that no one’s going to join your business opportunity if they don’t feel like they know you, like you, or trust you, so start with a genuine interest in getting to know them first. Would you agree?

What’s New with Apriori Beauty?

Apriori is continuing to grow at an impressive rate. When I joined, there were about 700 consultants and that was only a few months ago. There are currently 4000 consultants and counting. Most companies don’t grow at this rate unless you have outstanding products, an experienced management team, and leaders in the field. What’s new with Me?

I can’t believe it’s February already! It truly feels like I was ringing in the new year with my daughter who insisted on banging pots and pans to celebrate the new year. Celebrating the new year is indeed what I’ve been doing. January was a terrific business month for me with Apriori Beauty and it is my goal to continue the momentum heading into February. I’ve been busy and committed to fulfilling my goals set for 2010. One of them is to be constantly and consistent writing for my blog and building my business. In addition to using this outlet to continue building my Apriori Beauty and other income producing hobbies (see my sidebar), I hope to provide valuable direct sales/business tips for my fellow direct sellers, like you, so we can all benefit. I’ve found one of the best ways to expand your contact base is by sharing your knowledge with others. In addition to emailing tips to you ladies via email, I love social networking sites such as Twitter.

With social networking, it can dominate your time if you don’t use it wisely. As direct seller expert Jackie Ulmer wisely shared, be conscientious of your time on these social networking sites. Are you being productive or just “Facebooking” what you had for lunch. Of course, that doesn’t mean you spam your friends every chance you get with business opportunity either. Keeping a balance between business and personal updates is recommended. Along the way, be sure to provide valuable content for your audience. There are a ton of books on how to get started on Twitter and Facebook. Free content is everywhere, just Google it and you will surely find what you’re looking for, or don’t hesitate to shoot me an email. I’d love to hear from you.
